About Us
Hummingbird Child Care Centre (formally Hummingburde Child Care Society) is a community project and provides quality child care to enable young parents to complete their High School Education. The project was first sponsored by the Port Alberni Planning Committee and the Pacific Child Care Society and then developed by Hummingburde Child Care Society with support from School District #70. Financial assistance was provided by BC 21, Ministry of Social Services, Ministry of Women's Equality, Vancouver Foundation, Port Alberni Big Brothers/Sisters, Alberni Kiwanis, Port Alberni Knights of Columbus, Rotary Club of Port Alberni and Alberni Mall Merchants Association.
Our History:
Hummingbird was initially created by a group of community members who saw an increase of teen pregnancies in Port Alberni. Their research showed a definite need for a service that allowed young people to complete their education, receive support and have quality child care for their children. This is where Margaret McGarry and team from the Port Alberni Planning Committee, formed their vision and partnership in 1992. After 2 years of hard work, research proposals, design and planning, the teams vision became reality with the opening of HCC in September 1994.
"Never doubt that small group of committed people can change the world, Indeed it's all the ever has" ~ Margaret Mead
The Child Care Centre is administrated by Hummingbird Child Care Society (Board of Directors) and is licensed by the VIHA - Community Care Licensing Facilities, Our license enables us to care for 48 children daily, from birth to school age (5 years old), within our two facilities (24 children per centre) HCC expanded the program in September 2006 and welcomed HCC 2 to our community.
